Acute diverticulitis

Updated: Dec 25, 2024

Contribution:

Dr Melanie Lau

Patient data: 51-year-old Male

Presentation: 2 days pain in the left iliac fossa

Diagnosis:

Acute uncomplicated diverticulitis

Commentary:

Colonic Wall Thickening and pericolonic fat stranding of the sigmoid colon. At least one diverticulum is inflamed.

The images do not show significant abscess formation, free air (pneumoperitoneum), or other complications like fistula formation, which are important to rule out in acute diverticulitis.

Epiploic appendagitis can have a similar appearance, although the adjacent colon is usually less thickened, out of keeping with inflammatory mesenteric fat changes.
